Lead Poisoning

Lead poisoning is a medical condition that occurs when the body’s level of lead increases. Increased lead levels can cause damage to bodily organs and systems, and even small amounts can cause serious health problems, especially in children.

Lead poisoning is usually caused by environmental factors, such as exposure to lead based paint or lead contaminated dust.  It has also been found to be caused by exposure to contaminated water, soil, cosmetics and toys.

Lead poisoning can cause very serious mental and physical injuries, and, at very high levels, can cause seizures, paralysis and even death. Children are particularly susceptible because lead can interfere with a child’s developing nervous system, and result in learning and behavioral disorders.

Because lead poisoning often occurs with no obvious symptoms, it frequently goes unrecognized. However, children evidencing neurological problems, hyperactivity, distraction, irritability, aggressiveness or loss of appetite, should seek medical attention.
